Gena Garrett RDA, CTA, OMT

 [email protected]

Gena is an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist (OMT) receiving her education through the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy.  Gena is also a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) with a tremendous number of hours in continuing education in the fields of airway driven orthodontics, orthopedics, sleep disordered breathing, myofunctional therapy and temporomandibular joint disorders.  Her commitment in education has earned her the title of Certified Temporomandibular Joint Assistant (CTA).  She received her education and certification from the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.  Her specialty fields of Myofunctional Therapy and TMJ disorders are most often directly related to breathing disorders.  In order to address these issues she also received a certification in Buteyko Breathing at New York University.  Completing a mini-residency in dental sleep medicine at the University of North Carolina has given her the proper education to help her patients with obstructive sleep apnea and other types of sleep disordered breathing.

Gena has over 30 years of education and experience in her specialties.  She believes that most often malocclusion or TMJ disorders can be the result of a myofunctional disorder and/or a constricted airway.  Identifying the problem and addressing the disorder properly is key to success.  Establishing nasal breathing is crucial for ideal health.  Often in order to establish nasal breathing she works with ENT’s and allergist.  She teaches Buteyko breathing to both children and adults.  Nasal breathing can reduce the size of tonsils and adenoids, reduce allergies, improve asthma and calm anxieties.

Gena also has a program for thumbsucking cessation.  she can assist with tongue ties as well.  ideally a patient should go through er program in preparation for tongue release which can make the surgery easier and more successful.
