Most parents are confronted with the question sooner or later: What kind of orthodontics should I get for my child? Most people associate orthodontics with the application of braces to correct crooked teeth in children. Did you know that braces can also treat other conditions such as overbites and underbites? In addition to traditional metal and bracket braces we also offer clear braces in the form of Invisalign. Dr. Wiesse and the Beautiful Lake Ridge Smiles staff can help you choose the right orthodontics for your child.
When Are Braces Necessary?
Braces are used to correct what is called a malocclusion, or bad bite. Left untreated this can cause difficulty chewing, teeth that are difficult to clean, and abnormal wear to the enamel of your teeth. It is the decision of the parent to help their child if they need orthodontic care. In addition to helping correct dental issues, orthodontics also help with having teeth that are aligned and attractive.
According to the American Association of Orthodontics it is recommend that children have an orthodontic screening by age seven. By this time most permanent (adult) teeth have erupted to allow the orthodontist to identify potential problems. Generally orthodontics are placed between the ages of eight to 14 in order to avoid a malocclusion from occurring.
Traditional Braces or Invisalign?
Today’s advancements in orthodontics mean that kids and parents have many options. Braces can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic. The most common treatment is metal braces and the most popular cosmetic approach is Invisalign or ceramic brackets. Invisalign consists of clear aligners and are popular with teens who prefer to do without the restrictions, irritation and the self-consciousness associated with traditional braces. Whatever your choice, Dr. Wiesse can help you decide what is right for your individual needs and budget.
